Greenville native Alfred Holt Stone (1870-1955) assembled this collection as research for a book he never wrote. Stone, who served as State Tax Commissioner from 1931 to 1955, held conservative racial views and meticulously gathered everything related to the subject, including material contrary to his thinking. Stone donated the material to the Mississippi Department of Archives and History in 1942. The collection was indexed and annotated by Dr. James G. Hollandsworth, former dean of the Graduate School at the University of Southern Mississippi.
