Autobiographical report covering the military career of David Hunter during the Civil War. In 1872, the Adjutant General’s Office requested reports of war-time service from many former general in the Union army. Today, they can be read on microfilm in the National Archives. This report is one of few to be published. A facsimile of a handwritten letter from Abraham Lincoln to Hunter dated April 1, 1863, in which the President remarks on a recent excursion by black soldiers to Jacksonville, Florida, is tipped in behind the front cover.
