Volume: 96

13. H. T. Kealing, (ed.), The A.M.E. Church Review 24 (January 1908): 197-304.

Whole issue of an African American periodical containing articles, columns, editorials, and advertisements. On the cover, Mr. Stone has noted the page number of news item entitled “The Newspapers and the Negro,” in which the writer complains that newspapers publish stories that reflect the worst side of the African Americans, such as “murders, lynchings, suicides, divorces, etc.” The writer reports an study in which he read the leading newspapers in Philadelphia for a month, clipping every story related to African Americans. The reader found that articles “referring to the crimes of the Negroes, their weakness, and other shortcomings, and those taking a pessimistic view of the race, took up 87 per cent. of the newspaper space of the month, while articles referring to the good side of Negro life took up only 5 percent. of this space.” Mr. Stone comment in margin reads, “This has been re-printed by several Negro magazines and newspapers.” The item refers to an article (“The Negroes of Philadelphia”), which is noted in the previous title (volume 96, no. 12).
