History of Jefferson Davis’s aborted attempt when he was Secretary of War (1853-57) to introduce camels for transportation in the American southwest. Apparently, army hostlers disliked camels and treated their Arabian and Turkish handlers with “contempt.” Additionally, the author reports that horses objected to the smell of camels when stabled or picketed near them.
