Speech attacking the Democratic Party two months before the national elections of 1872. Toward the end of the speech, the author makes this point. “Every vote for a democratic candidate helps forward a party whose controlling element is that which caused the rebellion, which now resists the Constitution, and demands the repeal of the laws [13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments] which protect the rights it guarantees. It is therefore of the utmost importance to know what mischief may result from the accession of the democrats to political power” (italics in original).
