Explanation of why the two colonization societies follow different policies in regard to raising money for schools in Liberia. According to its constitution, the American Colonization Society can not raise money for education in Liberia because the beneficiaries have already been “colonized.” The New-York Colonization Society did not have the same restrictions in its constitution and thus favored raising money for education in Liberia because better schools there would encourage freedmen in the United States to immigrate.
