36. The Michigan University Magazine 2 (February 1868): 161-200.
Entire issue of a magazine published by students at the University of Michigan. Mr. Stone was probably interested in the article entitled “Should Congress Be Empowered to Regulate Suffrage in the States?” The article is actually the speech that won the Junior Prize Debate of the Alpha Nu Society on January 25, 1868. The speaker, F. M. Hamilton, argues that the federal government should not interfere in matters such as suffrage, which are best left to the states to regulate. Sixteen unnumbered pages at the end of the magazine are devoted to advertisements for books, musical instruments, clothing, professional services (e.g., dentistry), and sheet music. The advertisement on the back cover offers “decidedly the most popular list of songs ever published,” such as “Don’t Shut Out the Moonlight, Mother,” “I Wonder If He Loves Me,” and “Girls Will Have Their Way.”
