26. Calvin Colton, Colonization and Abolition ([Philadelphia?]: n.p., n.d.). (16 p.)

Comparison of colonization with abolition as a solution to the problem of slavery in the United States prepared under the aegis of the American Colonization Society. Perhaps not surprisingly, the author concludes that the colonization of African Americans in Liberia is superior to abolition as a means of eliminating slavery in the United States. For example, in a section entitled “Summary Contrast,” the author asserts that “Colonization has done something. Abolition has done nothing but agitate. Colonization has founded an empire. Abolition has laboured hard to upset one. Colonization has redeemed some thousands of slaves, and set them up in an independent commonwealth [Liberia]. Abolition has not redeemed one, but has riveted the chains of those it professes to pity, and aggravated their bondage.”
