10. “Free Labor in the West Indies,” The Farmer (April 1867): 109-12.
Review of a book entitled The Ordeal of Free Labor in the British West Indies by William G. Sewell, in which the author disputes the commonly held assumption that emancipation in those islands had resulted in “ruin and decay.” To the contrary, the author asserts that, with the exception of Jamaica, “all of the islands are wealthier and more prosperous than in the days of slavery.”
