Open letter objecting to Victor Hugo’s sentiments in regard to slavery as expressed in a letter to Mrs. Chapman. Hugo states, “Let all those great souls who love the United States, as a country, be re-assured. The United States must renounce slavery, or they must renounce liberty. They cannot renounce liberty. They must renounce slavery or renounce the Gospel. They will never renounce the Gospel!”
