Whole issue of “a monthly illustrated magazine devoted to the interests of the Colored Race.” The magazine is illustrated with photographs and displays advertisements in the front and back. This issue contains a biographical sketch of Robert Smalls, the slave who captured the Planter off Charleston harbor in 1861 and turned it over to the Union navy. Smalls played a prominent role in South Carolina during Reconstruction.
