11. The Colored American Magazine 3 (July 1901): 161-240.

Whole issue of “an illustrated monthly, devoted to literature, science, music, art, religion, facts, fiction and traditions of the Negro race.” The magazine is illustrated with photographs and displays advertisements in the front and back. A photograph of Miss Rachael Walker appears on the cover. She is described in the issue as “the Creole Nightingale” who possesses “a rich soprano voice of an unusual excellence and compass, the clearness and timbre of which entrance our ear, even as the sweetness and sympathy of her vocalization goes straight to the heart of the great audiences who ever throng to hear her.” Of French extraction and born in Louisiana, Miss Walker has been studying abroad for three years to develop her “inherent ability.”
