Volume: 86

1. The Colored American Magazine 1 (August 1900): 131-92.

Whole issue of “an illustrated monthly, devoted to literature, science, music, art, religion, facts, fiction and traditions of the Negro race.” The magazine is illustrated with photographs and displays advertisements on the last page and back cover. A photograph of Miss Mamie Williams appears on the cover. She is described in the issue as “another nightingale who bids fair to become as famous as her predecessors [from Providence, Rhode Island, Flora Batson Bergen and Madame Sisseretta Jones].”] “Miss Williams, who is a young lady of pleasing disposition, has a natural talent for music, and her voice is of that fine, sweet caliber that holds one entranced from the beginning to the end of the selection. Although juts merging from her teens, Miss Williams is the proud possessor of numerous medals won in competition. As she is ambitious and energetic, we fell assured that it will not be long before she will be as well known as either Flora or Sisseretta.”
