27. “Slavery, in Its Principles, Development, and Expedients,” Atlantic Monthly (May 1863): 627-40.

Essay blaming the slave states for creating disunion by insisting on the extension of slavery into territories that were, by mutual agreement, to remain free. The author argues that it was not abolitionists who forced the issue, but slaveholders who continued to force their interests on the free states. “Every compromise we [the free states] made to them [the slave states] only stimulated their rapacity, heightened their arrogance, increased their demands.”
