37. Booker T. Washington, “Will Education Solve the Race Problem? A Reply,” North American Review 171 (August 1900): 221-32.

Response to an article in The North American Review by Professor John Roach Straton, in which the author doubts whether African Americans can benefit from education. Mr. Washington believes that “a judicious system of industrial, mental and religious training” will elevate the black race and resolve the race problem as a result. According to Mr. Washington, the primary obstacle to achieving the education necessary for this transformation is money. (The collection has two copies of this article issued as a pamphlet in volumes 30 [no. 3] and 49 [no. 14]. The collection also has a copy of Professor Stratons’ article in volume 78 [no. 35].)
