Volume: 78

26. Thomas Nelson Page, “A Southerner on the Negro Question,” North American Review (April 1892): 401-13.

Rejoinder to an article by James Bryce in an earlier issue (see no. 35 in this volume). However, the author is not as optimistic as Mr. Bryce and insists that the rejection of black participation in the political process is non-negotiable. “We have educated him; we have aided him; we have sustained him in all right directions. We are ready to continue our aid; but we will not be dominated by him. When we shall be, it is our settled conviction that we shall deserve the degradation into which we shall have sunk.” (The collection has another copy of this article in volume 20 [no. 36].)
