Defense of the use of corporal punishment by the Dean of Saint Paul’s Cathedral in London. “Looking upon punishment, therefore, as designed to correct faults, to preserve the authority of superiors, to eradicate tendencies to vie, and to assist in implanting habits of industry and virtue in children otherwise inclined, I believe that no form of it is better adapted to its purpose than that which Solomon recommends and all nations have adopted. I only regret that its abuse has given too much ground for protests against its use, and I gladly raise my voice in favor of its wise an judicious application.”
