Commentary on Southern Wealth and Northern Profits by Thomas P. Kettel (New York, 1860). Kettel argued that the South produces the raw materials that the North profits from through its domination of manufacturing, banking, shipping, and international trade. The author states “that slave labor in the South produces more corn and cattle than free labor.” Mr. Stone has marked this passage with triple emphasis.
