1. E. B. Hunt, Union Foundations: A Study of American Nationality as a Fact of Science (New York: D. Van Nostrand, 1863). (61 p.)
Argument that the United States is the consequence of natural law as proscribed by God. The author believes that “science interprets God’s designs concerning Man and Nations” and that the physiographic characteristics of the northern hemisphere make the emergence of a single, undivided nation inevitable. The author extends his interpretation of natural law to include African Americans. He proposes that they be sent to South American, where they can be colonized in the Amazon basin. (The collection has another copy of this monograph in volume 8 [no. 2].)
