13. Robert Bennett Bean, “The Negro Brain,” Century Magazine 72 (September 1906): 778-84.

Popular version of an anatomical study of the brains of African Americans and European Americans. The author concludes that the black brain is anatomically different and thus intellectually inferior to the white brain. (According to Stephen Jay Gould in The Mismeasure of Man, Professor Bean’s mentor, Franklin P. Mall, discovered that his student had fudged the data.)
