18. James Hunt, On the Negro’s Places in Nature (London: Trübner & Co. for the Anthropological Society of London, 1863). (60, 4 p.)

Pseudoscientific analysis of the physical and moral attributes of persons of African ancestry. The writer concludes that Africans as a race are unfit for civilization and that philanthropic attempts to elevate members of the race will fail invariably. Tables giving measurements in centimeters of skeletal structures for Africans, including the cerebral cranium, are provided. The last four pages of the pamphlet deals with the Society’s purpose and officers.
