5. Life and Adventures of Uncle Tom Jones, for Forty Years a Slave! Also, the Surprising Adventures of Wild Tom, of the Island Retreat, a Fugitive Slave from South Carolina (Boston: [H. B. Skinner], ca 1850s). (64 p.)
Two accounts of slavery; one possibly autobiographical, the other fictional. “I was born a slave” is how the first account consisting of twenty-eight pages begins. The account of Wild Tom (36 p.) concerns the death of his wife at the hands of their overseer, Wild Tom’s revenge, and his eventual execution for murder by burning at a stake. (Another edition of this pamphlet entitled Experience and Personal Narrative of Uncle Tom Jones . . . can be found online at <http://docsouth.unc.edu/jonestom/jones.html>.)
