23. Thirteenth Annual Report of the Association for the Religious Instruction of the Negroes, in Liberty County, Georgia (Savannah, GA: Edward J. Purse, 1848). (68 p.)
Report of an interdenominational association dedicated to improving the morals and religiosity of slaves in Georgia. The report is divided into sections dealing with the work of four denominations: Baptists, Methodists, Episcopalians, and Presbyterians. Mr. Stone has marked on paragraph. “Under this head [Owners should use every effort to promote morality upon their plantations], it is proper to call attention of owners to the character and conduct of their Drivers, or Foremen, who have it amply in their power to oppress and to corrupt the people intrusted [sic] to their supervision. Yea, such may be the influence of these men and the fear inspired by them, that they may carry on their immoralities among the people to a great extent, and the owner be kept in profound ignorance of the fact” (emphasis in original).
