12. Robert Bingham, The New South: An Address by Col. Robert Bingham, of the Bingham School, Asheville, N. C. in the interest of National Aid to Education, 2nd ed. (N.p., 1899). (23 p.)

Review of the progress made in education in North Carolina since the Civil War for European Americans as well as African Americans. The speaker, who served under Robert E. Lee in the Army of Northern Virginia, bases his views on the belief that it was a blessing that the Confederacy lost the war and that slavery was abolished. The speaker asserts that the Confederate States of America was not a viable nation and that slavery was an anchor on the Southern economy before the war.
