7. William L. Royall, A Reply to “A Fool’s Errand, by One of the Fools”, 2nd ed. (New York: E. J. Hale & Son, 1881). (95 p.)

Critique of A Fool’s Errand by Albion Tourgée in which the author accuses Tourgée of spreading malicious misinformation about Southerners, especially those who fought for the Confederacy during the Civil War. Someone, not Mr. Stone, has penciled editorial comments in the margins of three chapters. For example, “Especially if drunk” is written next to “The ‘poor white man’ was as prompt to resent any apparent trespass upon his rights or personal dignity as the hands of his rich neighbor, as the rich neighbor would have been to resent the same thing at the hands of his social peer.”
