Analysis of social conditions in the South that contribute to lynching with the rejection of lynching as a legitimate alternative to the rule of law. Mr. Stone has noted ten passages, one of which follows. “Every lynching adds a desperate dash to the temper of the whole community, especially to the criminal temper. The preventive of crime—the only preventive that men have found—is the undelayed and certain and solemn punishment by law, sustained by a confident and unyielding body of public opinion.”
