43. Chas. H. Smith, “Have American Negroes Too Much Liberty,” Forum (October 1893): 176-83.

White supremacist argument that the increase in crime among African Americans has been caused by the leniency with which person of African ancestry in the United States have been treated since the Civil War. Northern philanthropy designed to aid black Southerners is also blamed. Among many interesting observations is the following. “Before the War, the marriage-relation among the negroes was kept almost inviolate. When it was broken, it was broken by the white man. The result was the mulattoes, whom the slave-woman was proud to claim, and she felt no dishonor.”
