Defense of the adoption of constitutions in several southern states that could be used to disenfranchise African Americans in those states. The author, president of Alabama’s constitutional convention, argues that if provisions of that state’s new constitution actually disenfranchises an African American, it does so only because that African American has disenfranchised himself (i.e., for want of an education).
