The author acknowledges that a few black women may be intelligent, noble, and refined, but declares that it is her intent to consider “the great dark, helpless, hopeless mass of women of their race as they are found leading their lawless and purposeless lives in the cane and cotton field, or herded together in the streets of the cities.”
