Strong criticism of the South by a history professor at Harvard University, especially in regard to the treatment of African Americans by white Southerners. This article provoked a vigorous defense of Southern institutions in an editorial that appeared later that year in Tom Watson’s Magazine (see no. 1 in this volume [4]).
