Biographical sketch of a northern business man who went south before the Civil War and made a fortune, much of which he gave to the American Missionary Association for the education of African Americans in the South. At the time, his gift of more than a million dollars in interest-bearing securities was the largest bequest by a living donor in the history of the country.
