17. Henry Clay, Speech of the Hon. Henry Clay, of Kentucky, on Taking up his Compromise Resolutions on the Subject of Slavery. Delivered in Senate, Feb. 5th & 6th, 1850 (New York: Stringer & Townsend, 1850). (32 p.)


Speech in favor of eight resolutions that later became known as the Compromise of 1850. Clay’s resolutions included provisions for the immediate admission of California as a free state, organization of territorial governments in New Mexico and Utah without reference to their status as slave or free, a new and stringent fugitive slave law coupled with the abolition of the domestic slave trade in the District of Columbia.
