14. “Abolition of the Slave Trade—and of Slavery,” Edinburgh Review (October 1824): 194-228.
Discussion of four documents regarding slavery published in 1824 in Great Britain. The first is a report by the directors of the African Institution, an anti-slavery organization. The second is a report of the Society for the Mitigation and Gradual Abolition of Slavery throughout the British Dominions. The debate in the House of Commons regarding the trial and death sentence of the Reverend John Smith, formerly a missionary to Demerara in Guyana, is the subject of the third document. The last concerns sugar production in the British East Indies using free labor.
