Account of noteworthy events during 1859-60 related to slavery and attempts to end it. Some of the topics covered in this report include the admission of Kansas into the Union, the foreign slave trade, manumissions, fugitive slaves, free people of color, and debates regarding slavery in the United States Congress. The largest section by far deals with John Brown, his raid on Harper’s Ferry, his execution, and the fate of his companions.
