10. “A Slave Marriage Law,” Southern Presbyterian Review 16 (October 1863): 145-62.

Confederate imprint examining the management of slaves by Southern slave owners, especially in regard to the issue of separating families. The author opines that a law designed to prevent the practice of selling family members to different owners is much to do about nothing. “Seriously, we do not know any legislation which would more fully realize Walpole’s witticism about shearing a hog—great cry and little wool.” Mr. Stone has marked this issue throughout. (The first half of this issue is devoted to an article entitled “Church and State,” which clearly is not the article Mr. Stone intended to collect.)
