First hand account of the living conditions for freedmen in the South following emancipation. Someone has written the following on the title page under the author’s name. “A colored man of midnight shade who was born a slave near Charleston S. C. The events narrated here are substantially facts from his own experiences.” (The collection has a copy of the author’s other work, The Views and Meditations of John Brown, in volume 13 [no. 5].)
