Someone has written the following on the title page under the author’s name. “A colored man of midnight shade who was born a slave near Charleston S. C. The events narrated here are substantially facts from his own experiences.” (The collection has a copy of the author’s other work, The Views and Meditations of John Brown, in volume 13 [no. 5].)
