The speech is entitled “The Opportunity and Obligation of the Educated Class of the Colored Race in the Southern States” and was delivered before an audience at the Agricultural and Mechanical College for Negroes at Normal, Alabama, by the Reverend A. D. Mayo on May 29, 1899. The excerpt, “How to Improve the Condition of the Negro,” is from The Future of the American Negro by Booker T. Washington.
