Address predicting a bright future for African Americans as long as they do not demand social equality. “The wisest among my race understand that the agitation of questions of social equality is the extremist folly, and that progress in the enjoyment of all privileges that will come to us, must be the result of severe and constant struggle, rather than of artificial forcing.” A letter from President Grover Cleveland complimenting Mr. Washington on his address appears on the first page of the pamphlet.
