Description of the etiology and prognosis of mentally ill African Americans housed in a state-supported asylum in Meridian, Mississippi. A table giving the total number of “colored inmates in the United States” based on the census of 1880 and broken out by state is appended. In 1880, Mississippi had 432 African Americans diagnosed as insane, of whom 166 were hospitalized.
