5. Booker T. Washington, An Open Letter by Booker T. Washington, of Tuskegee, Alabama, upon “Lynching in the South” (Tuskegee, AL: Tuskegee Institute Print, 1901). (8 p.)
Appeal to white Southerners to halt the epidemic of lynching in the South. The author provides data to demonstrate that lynching for the alleged crime of rape is an exception rather than the rule. “When we get to the point where four-fifths of the people lynched in our country in one year are for some crime other than rape, we can no longer plead and explain that we lynch for one crime alone.”
