23. [George] McDuffie, Governor McDuffie’s Message on the Slavery Question. 1835, American History Leaflets: Colonial and Constitutional, ed. by Albert Bushnell Hart and Edward Channing, no. 10 ([New York]: A. Lovell & Co., 1893) (16 p.)

Excerpts from a speech by the Governor of South Carolina to the Legislature on slavery. These passages provide an idea of what leaders in the Southern states were thinking in 1835 following three seminal events in regard to slavery: the dramatic increase in abolitionist criticism of slavery in the North, the Nat Turner slave insurrection of 1831, and the emancipation of slaves in the British West Indies in 1833.
