This issue contains three pieces dealing with benefits versus costs of slavery: “Rights and Privileges of the Free States” by “Pacificus” [J. R. Giddings] (1842), excerpts from debates in Congress (1844) on “Slavery a Benefit to Negro and White,” and “No Union with Slaveholders!” a series of quotations by William Lloyd Garrison (1842-44).
