Whole issue of a series reprinting sources in American History for use in the classroom. This issue contains an account of Abraham Lincoln’s meeting with African Americans in the White House regarding the question of emancipation (Lincoln favored colonization for slaves after they were freed), excerpts from “Black Codes” passed by several state legislatures in the South after the Civil War, a speech favoring equal rights for all people by Senator Charles Sumner from Massachusetts in 1866, and a speech against black suffrage by Senator Garrett Davis from Kentucky in 1866.
