In depth study of women in education divided into three parts: “Schools for the Education of Southern White Girls,” “Northern and Southern Women in the Education of the Negro in the South,” and “Southern White Women in the Southern Common School.” Taken together, the three parts consist of eighty-one chapters supplemented with numerous tables. Eight essays that have been published elsewhere are appended. Mr. Stone has marked several paragraphs in an essay entitled “The Negro American Citizen in the New American Life,” which appeared initially as an address at the first Mohonk Conference on the Negro Question in 1890. (The collection has a copy of this conference’s proceedings in volume 36 [no. 2].)
