4. Wm. M. Baskervill et al., Shall the Negro be Educated or Suppressed? A Symposium on Dr. Haygood’s Reply to Senator Eustis’s Paper on Race Antagonism (Nashville, TN: Open Letter Club, 1889). (24 p.)

Eleven letters responding to a reply by Atticus G. Haygood to an article written by Senator [James B.] Eustis from Louisiana and published in Forum (October 1888). Senator Eustis argued that persons who support the educational aspirations of African Americans are, in fact, endorsing the notion of social equality, which is totally unacceptable. Dr. Haygood disagrees with the Senator’s point of view, and the letters printed in this pamphlet for the most apart agree with Dr. Haygood. (The collection has a copy of Senator Eustis’s article in volume 5 [no. 12].)
