18. A. C. Lyall, Review of National Life and Character by Charles H. Pearson, Nineteenth Century (May 1893): 892-96.

Review of a book that predicts the eventual ascendancy of countries with the largest populations. “With civilization equally diffused the most populous country must ultimately be the most powerful.” Mr. Stone has underlined this sentence and wrote the following next to it in the margin. “If men were merely animals that might be so. But it is the spirit that makes the man.”
