67. [Thomas Jordan], “Jefferson Davis,” Harper’s New Monthly Magazine (October 1865): 610-20.

Derogatory assessment of Jefferson Davis as a war-time president by Beauregard’s Chief of Staff. The author concludes his article with this sentence. “In fine, his [Davis’s] course may be likened to that of the captain of a ship of war in action with a greatly superior adversary, who, while nailing his flag to the mast-head and shouting stout words of defiance to his foe and of supreme confidence to his crew, nevertheless from the onset of the battle has been secretly scuttling his vessel and all his boats beside.”
