17. Leonard Swain, Our Banners Set Up. A Sermon Preached at the Central Congregational Church, Providence, R. I., April 21, 1861 (Providence, RI: Knowles, Anthony & Co., 1861). (16 p.)
Sermon in which the preacher urges the congregation to support the Union in the pending conflict. “Our enemies [Secessionists] have decided that this question [whether states can secede from the Union] must be settled by war. We have no alternative therefore, but to meet force with force, and in the name of our God to set up our banner.” The text for the sermon comes from the Psalms 20:5. “In the name of our God we will set up our banners.”
