Confederate imprint of a general ordering issued by General Samuel Cooper, Adjutant and Inspector General of the Confederate army, in which procedures for protecting the property rights of slave owners whose slaves have been impressed by a Confederate authority. Among other things, these procedures call for the establishment of eighteen depots throughout the Confederacy where slaves separated from their owners can be held pending identification and eventual return. The two depots established in Mississippi were located at Brookhaven and Enterprise. The general order bears two endorsements, one by James A. Seddon, Secretary of War, and the second by Jefferson Davis.
