5. Frank Johnson, “Conference between Gen. [sic] George and Gov. Ames,” Publications of Mississippi Historical Society 6 (1903): 65-77; reprint.
Account of Senator J. Z. George’s efforts to induce Governor Adelbert Ames to disarm companies of black militia organized to counter violence directed toward African Americans during the Vicksburg riot in 1874 and Clinton riot in 1875. The author blames African Americans for both riots. (For some unexplained reason, “Senator George” becomes “General George” on page 68, and he retains that title for the rest of the article, as well as in the title.)
